owadays, the state-of-the-art medical technologies allow us to peek inside our bodies. Techniques such as MRI, CT, ultrasound (and many more) enable us to look at our hearts, lungs,brain – and provide tremendous help to the doctors which can treat them. However, as amazing as those techniques are, we still look at the results on the flat screens of our computers, while our bodies are undoubtedly not paper-flat. They are 3 – dimensional, spatially complex structures.
To picture our 3-dimensional organs, medical specialists do a complex and tedious mental process to reconstruct their shape in their minds – only by looking at flat images and slices of our organs. They do it during surgeries, during prenatal diagnosis of our soon-to-be-born babies, or when they check up our bones when we sprained our ankle that last time.
And when they want to look closer at a part of the body, focus on it, for instance when planning a surgery, it’s even more difficult.
